I haven't particularly enjoyed the others I've played because of how bad the stories usually are. I think the only one I've paid for outside of that Humble bundle is Sakura Dungeon and it's the only one I'd recommend to play. Keeping Tsuyuri and Silva was pointless, since it's cheaper to just pay some random guy to make up smut rather than an "intricate" (by Winged Cloud's standards) story. So what happened? Most likely the head honchos stopped giving a fuck about integrity and just want cash. There are no credits at the end of Sakura Angels, probably because they didn't want to give the writer duo any. Especially Sakura Angels, which just makes fun of the whole idea with the MC's inner monologue essentially becoming a narrator with ADD at a certain moment.
What do I believe? Sakura Spirit was supposed to be a parody, making fun of ecchi animes and VNs with their "oh so close" moments for titty. (Edit: According to VNDB, Pyrite Heart was Winged Cloud's first VN) With it's lack of boobage, it didn't succeed so well. If you check Winged Cloud's history, you can see that they even have a non-Sakura game between Spirit and Angels called Pyrite Heart. I remember around the time for Sakura Angels, Winged Cloud had contacted a friend of mine and asked him to write what would essentially become Sakura Swim Club, with a couple of CGs done by Wanaca to confirm the fact, which is why I was aware of this writing shift.
However, in Sakura Spirit they have been credited to "Tsuyuri & Silva". From Sakura Fantasy onward, Story & Writing credit has been given to someone called "Liberty". The game itself is much longer than the other Sakura games. In a way, it tried to break the limits of the biggest digital distribution platform for games, and it succeeded.īut how does Sakura Spirit stand out from the rest? Many ways. "But Sakura Spirit is filled with anime tiddies, why would it still try?" Because they had to. It's clear that no matter how much you want to deny it, Sakura Spirit was a massive success and a pioneer for VNs on Steam. Every youtuber from Game Grumps to little Johnny played it. Sakura Spirit still has that "This game includes nudity and explicit sexual dialog." warning text on its store page, something that did not appear since. Visual Novels didn't really have any presence on Steam yet, nor did "sexy" games. When Sakura Spirit first came out on Steam in 2014 (yes, that long ago), it was a surprising breakthrough. I'd like to present an alternative viewpoint: Sakura Spirit TRIED. What do y’all think? I haven’t played nearly all of them, only (I’ll list it out in case someone cares to know lol) Sakura Angels, Sakura Spirit, Sakura Beach 1 & 2 and Sakura Fantasy Chapter 1.ĭo they care about the story quality? I have been told, and also somewhat assume, that their novels are more for fan service and the meme of playing it rather than enjoying it. The art work is lovely to look at, but I did feel bored to tears - especially in Sakura Spirit. The girls always end up in not-quite-hentai situations, a couple of the games felt boring after a while. The story seems textbook and kinda overly simplified and dumb. As apparently ((and I STRESS this, this post is about my curiosity not me slagging on the Sakura series)) story wise their novels kinda suck. I’ve only played a few, but from the ones that I have and what other friends have told me, I have a wavering opinion on them. However I don’t remember any of them being remotely good imo save Sakura Fantasy Chapter one - and even that was just a bare pass once I compared it to other visual novels not from the franchise. Browsing through my steam library, remembered I have a handful of Sakura Novels from the humble bundle a while back.
